As members of the British Jewish community, but more importantly as human beings who have been taught to care for one another, we are writing to express our support for Beth Alexander, the young mother who has been effectively abandoned and shunned by the Viennese Jewish community during a bitter and extremely unfair custody battle.
We also express our support for the example set by members of the British Rabbinate, who far from taking sides, are calling for a fair and dignified resolution to this case.
We believe the way Ms Alexander has been treated in Vienna to be a Chillul Hashem, bringing the Jewish community and Jewish values into disrepute. We also question why a communal rabbi there ‘refuses to become personally involved’ in such a difficult case involving the future of two young children.
As friends of Ms Alexander we have seen the unjustified pain, trauma and embarrassment that this situation has caused her, alone in a strange country with little or no support. We urge the UK Rabbinate to continue its efforts and ask the wider Jewish community to offer their moral support to ensure that proceedings are carried out fairly, transparently and as soon as possible for the sake of Ms Alexander and her two young children.
